On 14th April 2021 the Council of Minister approved Timor – Leste’s candidacy to the Human rights council for the terms 2024 – 2026. Should Timor- Leste be elected there are four Key priorities for Timor – Leste that need to be work in the Council which linkage with the government priorities such as:
- Gender equality and the fights against all forms of discrimination
Timor-Leste commits to advocate for gender equality and end all forms of discrimination against women and girls. -
- Freedom of opinion and expression
As Timor-Leste constitution guarantees freedom of opinion and expression. Timor-Leste continues to improve the regulation and policy pertaining to the enjoyment of freedom of opinion and expression. For example, through Media Law No 5/2014, the Government continues to support and provide capacity building to the media officer.
- The rights of children
Timor-Leste is commits to advocate for the rights of children to education, registration, and protection against violence and abuse therefore, Timor-Leste’s National Action Plan for Children is a manifestation and commitment of the Governments of the rights of children to survival, development, protection, participation, and to attain their full potential. Timor-Leste also established a Commission on the Rights of the Child.
- Human Rights and Climate
Timor-Leste commits to advocate for the protection of human rights that may be affected by climate change and as a small country in November last year, Timor–Leste launched a campaign for the Climate adaptation in Glasgow in 2021.
