H.E. Ambassador Adão Barbosa, Timor-Leste Special Envoy on Climate Change Affairs and LDC’s Lead Negotiator for Loss and Damage spoke at the Event entitled “Funding the Justice Reset: From Glasgow to COP27 - Climate Justice: Just Transition Donor Collaborative”.
The meeting is the largest event for private philanthropy with nearly all of the world’s leading climate philanthropies attending in person or virtually.
Climate change only gets 2% of global philanthropic funding and most of that has gone to groups based in the Global North. Many donors recognize that this cannot continue. They now want to increase their funding to the Global South including for advocacy, movement building and grassroots work. Some are also trying to shift resource and power for climate justice and just transition work.
On behalf of 46 LDCs, Ambassador Barbosa stressed that financing for loss and damage is critical to support vulnerable countries, specially the LDCs. He further invited developed parties and philanthropist from all over the world to deliver climate justice for vulnerable countries through providing finance of loss and damage.
The event is also attended by Ms. Mairi McAllan, the Scottish Minister for Environment Biodiversity and Land; H.E. Mr. Abdul Azad, Commissioner, Commission on BiodiverCities & Special Envoy, CVF Presidency of Bangladesh, Mr. Tasneen Essop, Executive Director, Climate Action Network International; Mr. Asad Rehman, COP26 Coalition Lead & Global Director, War on Want; Ms. Kate Hampton, Executive Director of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation.
Ambassador Barbosa was accompanied by Mr. Hafij Khan, Co-Coordinator for loss and damage on behalf of LDCs, Ms. Sneha Pandey, Technical Adviser to the LDCs Loss and Damage team, and Ms. Didina Coelho, Director for DNONU-MNEC.
